چکیده

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) wear in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) components is one of the main reasons of the failure of implants and the consequent necessity of a revision procedure. Experimental wear tests are commonly used to quantify polyethylene wear in an implant, but these procedures are quite expensive and time consuming. On the other hand, numerical models could be used to predict the results of a wear test in less time with less cost. This requires, however, that such a model is not only available, but also validated. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop and validate a finite element methodology to be used for predicting polyethylene wear in TKAs. Initially, the wear model was calibrated using the results of an experimental roll-on-plane wear test. Afterwards, the developed wear model was applied to predict patello-femoral wear. Finally, the numerical model was validated by comparing the numerically-predicted wear, with experimental results achieving good agreement. OPEN ACCESS Lubricants 2014, 2 194

Effect of Polyethylene Crosslinking and Bearing Design on Wear of Unicompartmental Arthroplasty.

Wear and polyethylene damage continue to be important factors affecting outcomes of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty. We compared two design rationales for unicompartmental arthroplasty: fully congruent mobile bearings; or moderately conforming fixed bearings using experimental and computational wear simulation. Experimental wear rates were 3.89 (±0.12) mg/million cycles for the highly crossl...

Effects of Tibial Insert Slope on Polyethylene Wear and Stress

INTRODUCTION: Both posterior stabilized (PS) and cruciate retaining (CR) total knee replacement systems have demonstrated high rates of survivorship, high clinical knee scores and high patient satisfaction scores for decades. However, CR total knees sometimes exhibit more varied kinematics and a smaller range of motion than similar PS knees. Many factors can cause this, but one important factor...

Investigation of Wear Behavior of Biopolymers for Total Knee Replacements Through Invitro Experimentation

The average life span of knee prosthesis used in Total Knee Replacement (TKR) is approximately 10 to 15 years. Literature indicates that the reasons for implant failures include wear, infection, instability, and stiffness. However, the majority of failures are due to wear and tear of the prosthesis. The most common biopolymer used in TKR  is Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE). Pr...

Wear of moderately cross-linked polyethylene fixed bearing knee replacements

Cross-linked polyethylene has been explored as an alternative to conventional polyethylene in total joint replacement in order to reduce wear volume and decrease failure through polyethylene wear debris induced osteolysis [1]. Due to the demands of a total knee replacement, moderately cross-linked polyethylene is recommended to retain mechanical properties [2]. This study aims to investigate th...
